Democracy

Democracy is Shirk

The following is a work-in-progress and will continue to be updated, in sha Allah. I wanted to get this out before Election Day (November 3rd) 2026.

Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know. {12:40}

In the West, especially for those of us who were born and raised here, we are beaten over the head and programmed with the secular idea of “separation of church and state”, or in our case you could say “separation of masjid and state”, almost immediately in school and all around us in society. We are so deeply programmed with this that many of us are completely unable to see outside of it. As a result, when we try to warn others in our communities about committing Shirk in Allah’s Hakimiyyah and instead call them back to Tawheed, we are often laughed at, mocked, and then subsequently ignored. The idea of calling only to the Shari’ah of Allah is now looked at as something strange and deserving of ridicule and mockery, and yet these same mockers will turn around and claim to be servants of Allah and part of the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ.

To understand the Islamic position on any concept, topic, or idea, we first have to examine and understand the exact nature of what said concept actually is.

What is Democracy?

The whole point of modern secular democracy is that ultimate legislative authority rests with man rather than God. We all know the story of how the Pilgrims fled religious persecution and sailed to the New World. And eventually, throughout American history, the idea began to develop that religion and government should be kept separate. This wasn’t necessarily because people had abandoned their religious beliefs or stopped wanting their laws to reflect God’s will (or rather, what they thought was God’s will). In fact, many of the people involved in establishing this system were deeply religious Christians. Rather, the governing principle increasingly became that legislative authority belonged to human institutions, even when those institutions and the people operating within them were guided by religious convictions.

I want to repeat this point because it’s crucial for understanding the rest of this article.

Democracy means that ultimate legislative authority, the right to decide right from wrong, halaal or haraam, resides with man rather than with Allah.

Democracy can also be succinctly summarized as the system of law of the people, by the people, for the people.

But is this what Islam teaches? Of course not. Islam, and more specifically Allah’s Shari’ah, is the system of law of Allah, by Allah, for Allah.

In Islam, do we have anything called “separation of mosque and state”? Did Allah or His Messenger ﷺ ever say this? No, of course not. The Religion is the Law. The Law is the Religion. There can never be any separation.

What Did Allah Say About His Legislation?

2:256
Sahih International

So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

Muhsin Khan

Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

Here it is made clear that we must first disbelieve in Taghut, then believe in Allah. This is also evidenced in the Shahadah. We must first negate all worship for anyone or anything else, then affirm belief in Allah and worship for Him alone.

4:59

Sahih International

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.

Muhsin Khan

O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger (SAW), if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.

The Madkhalis misuse this ayah to justify their cementing and polishing the thrones of the Tawagheet rulers currently in power in Muslim lands, but that’s a separate, albeit still related, discussion.

4:60

Sahih International

Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray.

Muhsin Khan

Have you seen those (hypocrites) who claim that they believe in that which has been sent down to you, and that which was sent down before you, and they wish to go for judgement (in their disputes) to the Taghut (false judges, etc.) while they have been ordered to reject them. But Shaitan (Satan) wishes to lead them far astray.

4:61

Sahih International

And when it is said to them, “Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.

Muhsin Khan

And when it is said to them: “Come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger (Muhammad SAW),” you (Muhammad SAW) see the hypocrites turn away from you (Muhammad SAW) with aversion.

SubhanAllah is this not what we see right before our eyes today? These ayat alone should be enough to shut down any discussion on this issue.

4:65

Sahih International

But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.

Muhsin Khan

But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad SAW) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.

Does this say for us to vote for some politician and make them judge over our disputes? Or does this say to refer to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, i.e. the Shari’ah, judge over our disputes?

12:40

Sahih International

Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

Muhsin Khan

“The command (or the judgement) is for none but Allah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him (i.e. His Monotheism), that is the (true) straight religion, but most men know not.

Allah makes it clear here that Legislation is for none but Him, and hten he immediately links it to worship and being upon the correct religion. And SubhanAllah, when He says “but most of the people do not know” it is as if this ayah was just revealed today and He is describing the state of the Ummah.

9:31

Sahih International

They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah , and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

Muhsin Khan

They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)) to worship none but One Ilah (God – Allah) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Praise and glory be to Him, (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).”

This ayah combined with the aforementioned 4:59-61 should really be the nail in the coffin for any argument in favor of Democracy and man-made law. It’s perfectly clear, there’s not even the need for commentary.

There is also a Hadith that corresponds with this ayah.

5:44

Sahih International

Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah ] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allah , and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers.

Muhsin Khan

Verily, We did send down the Taurat (Torah) [to Musa (Moses)], therein was guidance and light, by which the Prophets, who submitted themselves to Allah’s Will, judged the Jews. And the rabbis and the priests [too judged the Jews by the Taurat (Torah) after those Prophets] for to them was entrusted the protection of Allah’s Book, and they were witnesses thereto. Therefore fear not men but fear Me (O Jews) and sell not My Verses for a miserable price. And whosoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, such are the Kafirun (i.e. disbelievers – of a lesser degree as they do not act on Allah’s Laws).

6:114

Sahih International

[Say], “Then is it other than Allah I should seek as judge while it is He who has revealed to you the Book explained in detail?” And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth, so never be among the doubters.

Muhsin Khan

[Say (O Muhammad SAW)] “Shall I seek a judge other than Allah while it is He Who has sent down unto you the Book (The Quran), explained in detail.” Those unto whom We gave the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] know that it is revealed from your Lord in truth. So be not you of those who doubt.

18:26

Sahih International

Say, ” Allah is most knowing of how long they remained. He has [knowledge of] the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. How Seeing is He and how Hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and He shares not His legislation with anyone.”

Muhsin Khan

Say: “Allah knows best how long they stayed. With Him is (the knowledge of) the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How clearly He sees, and hears (everything)! They have no Wali (Helper, Disposer of affairs, Protector, etc.) other than Him, and He makes none to share in His Decision and His Rule.”

6:121
Sahih International

And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators [of others with Him].

Muhsin Khan

Eat not (O believers) of that (meat) on which Allah’s Name has not been pronounced (at the time of the slaughtering of the animal), for sure it is Fisq (a sin and disobedience of Allah). And certainly, the Shayatin (devils) do inspire their friends (from mankind) to dispute with you, and if you obey them [by making Al-Maytatah (a dead animal) legal by eating it], then you would indeed be Mushrikun (polytheists) [because they (devils and their friends) made lawful to you to eat that which Allah has made unlawful to eat and you obeyed them by considering it lawful to eat, and by doing so you worshipped them, and to worship others besides Allah is polytheism].

7:54

Sahih International

Indeed, your Lord is Allah , who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah , Lord of the worlds.

Muhsin Khan

Indeed your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days, and then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty). He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly, and (He created) the sun, the moon, the stars subjected to His Command. Surely, His is the Creation and Commandment. Blessed be Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)!

33:36
Sahih International

It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.

Muhsin Khan

It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed in a plain error.
