Episode 7 – The Myth of the “Moderate” Muslim

This was initially a written blog post, but then I decided to record a podcast episode instead. The original blog post is below, and below that are the show notes.

You know what really KILLS me about the westernized/modernized/asleep/coconut/whatever you-want-to-call-them so-called “Muslims”? They themselves are guilty of all the accusations they make against others and they don’t see it.

For example: They act like they’re so open minded and tolerant, but the moment you bring an understanding/opinion/evidence that contradicts their “hold hands and sing kumbayah” worldview, they immediately drop their open-minded tolerance and start name-calling, always hiding behind the excuses of “context” and “nuance”, even when the supposed context actually proves them wrong.

They have no concept of al-walaa wal-baraa, constantly making excuses for the kuffar and hiding behind “dawah” as an excuse for compromising on well-documented Islamic principles. They think that we are brothers and sisters in humanity and that we are all equal. But as soon as you bring an understanding that they don’t like or that contradicts their current view, they’re so quick to instantly shun you, condescend to you and accuse you of lacking knowledge, etc. when THEY are actually the ones who lack knowledge.

When you tell them that most of the so-called “scholars” of today are on the payroll of the Tawagheet, they laugh at you like you’re some crazy conspiracy theorist, even though organizations like RAND have openly stated that they are doing this (see RAND’s published paper, Civil Democratic Islam, for example).

They oversimplify the Seerah and claim that RasulAllah (SAWS) was only compassionate merciful and nothing else (and completely ignore the offensive jihad of both RasulAllah (SAWS) himself and the Sahabah after RasulAllah (SAWS)’s death), but when you bring simple evidences from the Seerah that contradict this idea, all of a sudden it becomes complicated! “It’s a complex issue akhi, you have to understand the context”, again hiding behind the excuses of supposed “context” and “nuance”. In fact, they do this with nearly all matters of Deen. They oversimplify for the sake of maintaining their own comfortable understanding, and then over-complicate as soon as they are challenged. And actually, they don’t even call you akhi because to them, you’re not a real Muslim and they themselves lack the character and manners that they accuse you of lacking.

Their views are so twisted by the infiltration and influence of the kuffar that when you bring them evidence, they dismiss it and accuse YOU of being twisted. They’re so quick to condemn perceived “judgment” and “extremism” when really THEY are the ones who are judgmental and have fallen into an extreme.

If you suggest that Islam is anything other than absolute unwavering pacifism and “peace”, they call you an extremist are so quick to say “such-and-such people aren’t Muslims”, making takfir entirely from their own desires, then they accuse the mujaahideen of being “khawarij” for making takfir which the text supports!

They claim to be open minded and tolerant, then they are quick to start debates with you all the while accusing you of being inflammatory and quick to argue! They pretend to be open-minded and have nuance when in reality THEY are the ones who are stubborn upon falsehood! They accuse you of lacking manners and character, when in reality they are the ones who are quick to arguments, judgment, name-calling, etc. instead of perhaps simply asking something like “what is your evidence?”. They accuse you of arrogance for not accepting their worldview despite your ability to refute it with evidence, when in reality they are the ones arrogantly dismissing any discussion contrary to their own opinions.

When it comes to the kuffar, they are so quick to say things like “just because we have different beliefs/viewpoints/opinions doesn’t mean we can’t get along”, but when you come with talk something like al-walaa wal-baraa, watch how quickly they ostracize, condemn, slander, and condescend to you!

When we see our brothers and sisters being slaughtered all over the world, they cry their defeatist crocodile tears and say “all we can do is make du’a”, but as soon as Fulaan and Fulaan decide to do follow up their du’a with action, they condemn them and cry “peace”!

They slander the mujaahideen, they ignore the classical scholars in favor of their modern day celebrities, and they want to hold hands with the kuffar and be unified with them, and they completely reject any suggestion of anything otherwise. They march to the same drum beat as the kuffar, they adopt the same opinions and views of the kuffar, they walk talk and act like the kuffar, they even THINK like the kuffar. But they think because they have the label of “Muslim” then they are automatically on the right path no matter what.

And when it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption on the earth,” they say, “We are but reformers.” Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not. (Baqarah 11-12)

May Allah make us never like them. If we are indeed upon falsehood then may Allah save us from arrogance and open our hearts to accept the haqq. And if we are indeed upon haqq then may Allah shield us from any and all falsehood and misguidance. AMEEN.

Corrections

  • Due to some errors in the recording process, there are a few brief moments where the recording drops out and it cuts words in the middle of a few sentences.
  • At 1:04:10, I meant to say “5 minute read of the Seerah”, not “Surah”

Al-Walaa wal-Baraa

Sh. Abdullah al-Faisal – Al-Walaa Wal-Baraa

Ayat from the Episode

(Sahih International) Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.

(Muhsin Khan) Is then he who is a believer like him who is Fasiq (disbeliever and disobedient to Allah)? Not equal are they.

Surat As-Sajdah (The Prostration) 18

(Sahih International) And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, “Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.

(Muhsin Khan) Never will the Jews nor the Christians be pleased with you (O Muhammad Peace be upon him ) till you follow their religion. Say: “Verily, the Guidance of Allah (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) that is the (only) Guidance. And if you (O Muhammad Peace be upon him ) were to follow their (Jews and Christians) desires after what you have received of Knowledge (i.e. the Quran), then you would have against Allah neither any Wali (protector or guardian) nor any helper.

Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow) 120

(Sahih International) O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.

(Muhsin Khan) O you who believe! Take not as (your) Bitanah (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends, etc.) those outside your religion (pagans, Jews, Christians, and hypocrites) since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. Indeed We have made plain to you the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses) if you understand.

Surat ‘Āli `Imrān (Family of Imran) 118

(Sahih International) There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, “Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah . We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone” except for the saying of Abraham to his father, “I will surely ask forgiveness for you, but I have not [power to do] for you anything against Allah . Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is the destination.

(Muhsin Khan) Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and those with him, when they said to their people: “Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allah Alone,” except the saying of Ibrahim (Abraham) to his father: “Verily, I will ask for forgiveness (from Allah) for you, but I have no power to do anything for you before Allah.” Our Lord! In You (Alone) we put our trust, and to You (Alone) we turn in repentance, and to You (Alone) is (our) final Return,
